Battery Management Systems

Battery management systems (BMS) monitor and protect batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy systems, and other applications. The BMS ensures that the battery is operating within safe limits, extends the battery's life. The BMS improves overall system performance.

Structure of The BMS

A BMS typically consists of a microcontroller, a voltage sensor, a temperature sensor, and a communications interface. The microcontroller  monitors the battery's voltage and temperature. It controls the charging and discharging of the battery. The voltage sensor measures the battery's voltage. The temperature sensor measures the temperature of the battery. The communications interface allows the BMS to communicate with other devices, such as the EV's on-board computer or a remote monitoring system.

Functions of The BMS

The BMS's main functions are to monitor the battery's state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and state of power (SOP). SOC is the percentage of the battery's capacity that is currently being used. SOH is a measure of the battery's overall health. SOP is a measure of the battery's power output. By monitoring these three states, the BMS can take appropriate action to protect the battery and prolong its life.

BMS protect the battery from overcharging and overdischarging. Overcharging can cause the battery's voltage to rise to dangerous levels.  Then it can cause damage the battery and even cause a fire. Overdischarging can cause the battery's voltage to drop too low. It can also damage the battery and cause it to lose capacity over time. The BMS can prevent these problems by controlling the charging and discharging of the battery.

BMS balance the individual cells within a battery pack. When a battery pack is being charged or discharged, the individual cells within the pack can become unbalanced. This can cause some cells to become overcharged or overdischarged. These situtations can cause damage and reduce the overall performance of the battery pack. The BMS can balance the cells by controlling the charging and discharging of individual cells.
