A 3-pole contactor is an electromechanical switching device used to switch power to a three-phase load. Operating on the same electromagnetic principle as a standard relay, energizing the coil generates a magnetic field that pulls the armature to toggle normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts. When coil power is removed, spring return mechanisms return the contacts to their normal state.

Unlike single-phase power, standard three-phase AC distribution supplies power across three active conductors (or four conductors including neutral). This allows balanced multi-phase motor control as well as phase-to-neutral single-phase circuit distribution where required.
